I'd be concerned about survival bias in this type of review - survivors who lasted long enough got a filter, while the sick ones who died quickly didn't. This question can only be really answered in a randomised controlled trial, and until that time, there isn't enough evidence to support routine use. | |

While the strength of the conclusions of this extensive review are limited by the study design, the role of caval filters in patients with pulmonary embolism, particularly in unstable patients, appears beneficial.
Prospective randomised trials are required to...
